Sunshine Coast Hinterland, QLD
Glass-fronted family barn for long evenings by the fire
Snapshot
The Brief
A family like this comes with a list that reads like most families on acreage: room for a LandCruiser, a boat, and bikes without cramming them into a double garage. A kitchen that looks out over the yard so the kids can disappear outside without disappearing from view. And a home that felt like it belonged in the hinterland, not like it had been lifted off a suburban estate and dropped on five acres.
The Land
Gently north-facing slope with elevated views toward the Blackall Range. The block narrows toward the rear, which pushed the main form close to the eastern boundary and freed up the northern aspect for living and outdoor space. Bushfire constraints meant a simplified roof form and non-combustible cladding on the south and west faces — both of which ended up shaping the design in a good way.
The Plan
Shed / Workshop
A three-bay shed wing sits at the entry end of the home, connected to the house via a wide mudroom-laundry run. Deep bays with high clearance fit the Cruiser, the boat on a trailer, and still leave room for a proper workshop bench along the back wall.
Kitchen / Living / Verandah
The main pavilion opens north through a run of stacker doors onto a covered verandah that extends the full width of the home. The kitchen sits at the centre with clear sightlines to the yard and to the verandah — adults in the kitchen can see both. The fireplace anchors the living end for the cool nights that come with hinterland elevation.
Bedrooms / Kids / Retreat
The bedroom wing steps down the slope slightly, giving each room a lower ceiling and a more private feel against the openness of the main living space. The master looks east to the morning light. The kids are together in a run of three rooms with shared bathroom — close enough to wrangle, far enough for quiet.
